The Secret Message of Jesus, by Brian McLaren, is one of those books that I read again and again. It is truly, a remarkable book. It brings home the clear message of Jesus. It has brought me much joy and pain. Yes, that’s right. Pain. Why pain? Because it is a book that will change you. It ‘gets into you system’ and starts gnawing at you. It will change your life.
Simply Christian, by the Bishop of Durham, Tom (N. T.) Wright, is the most important book I have read in a while. Bishop Tom has taken the complex and made it simple. In this book, he sets out to show the ‘basics’ of why Christianity makes sense. Read this book in combination with The Secret Message of Jesus above, and you will have a very real rounded view of Christian belief and duty.
Christ of the Celts, by J Philip Newell, is a life changing book. It challenges us at deep, deep levels. It is a book for anyone looking for a more holistic approach to things like the natural world and the spiritual world. I will say, however, that it is not for someone with a weak constitution. It will make you question a lot of what one has been aught about Christianity. Highly recommended.
